Edward Feigenbaum
Chairman
Computer Science Department
Dear Ed,
\J
We thought it would be good to put into writing the position of
CCRMA (the music group) as it was stated at our meeting last Friday, June 15.
In all our discussions the main point made by our group has been that
the move of the AI lab to Margaret Jacks Hall should not disrupt
the ongoing projects of our students and staff any more than it disrupts
the projects of any other research group.
Fortunately the university has committed itself to support of the
Music Department's intention to acquire a separate computer facility. We
are happy about this and are pursuing the matter with all possible speed.
However, as you well know, three to five months is the minimum delivery
time for such a system. We would have liked to have spent as much as a
year in assembling our own system but the difficult space situation in
Jacks Hall makes it best for us to rush this work.
Because of this, it would be highly advantageous to this group if
the moving date of the AI lab could be delayed until our own system is
operational at the D.C. Power building. Our target date for this state
of affairs is October 15. Our system is being ordered and is scheduled
for delivery September 15. It is possible that the system might be
working in less than thirty days from that time. In that case the AI lab
move could occur earlier than October 15. In any case we would not push
for delaying the move beyond that date. As we understand it there is
some question about how soon certain hardware, required by the move of the
AI lab, might be ready. We might suggest that an October moving date would
ensure that this hardware could be built and fully tested before installation
in the new quarters.
We fully understand that there are several reasons why you want the
AI lab to move as quickly as possible. A primary reason appears to be
that an ARPAnet IMP is needed so that the SCORE computer can be installed in
Jacks Hall. It has been suggested that it might be possible to borrow an
IMP for a few months. If this proves to be true, SCORE could be moved quite
soon.
If circumstances force an August moving date
and indeed the new AI lab hardware is ready by that time, the CCRMA group would
expect to occupy its originally assigned space
in Jacks Hall until its new system is operational. This space consists of
the three adjoining rooms, numbers 416, 416B, 420 and the sound studio, 433.
Considering the nature of our work and the size of our group (15) it is
clear that we will be working in conditions at least as crowded as those of
any other research group. We wish to assure you that we consider this a
temporary occupation of space and that we will move out of these rooms as
soon as it is possible to continue our work with our own system.
It is hard to see how there could be objection to this position.
We are not asking for any sort of preferential treatment, only that we be
treated no worse than any other group. With any new building, the details
of space use tend to evolve a good deal in the first year or so.
CCRMA's temporary presence in these rooms could hardly upset the
long-range plans for space in Jacks Hall.
We are really very sorry that this issue has caused friction to
develop between CCRMA and some elements of the Computer Science
Department. We sincerely believe that our past association has been
mutually beneficial and we hope that cooperation can be continued until
and after the separate music system is established.
